Depression is a disease that doesn’t discriminate between old, young, rich, poor, and everyone in between. Only about 50% of people who are diagnosed with depression get the treatment they need, and 30% of the people who do get treatment won’t get enough relief from their symptoms.

I wanted to provide my patients with another option for treating depression, especially for people

who haven’t had success with medications or therapy. Because I learned about TMS in my medical training,

I started to look around for where my patients could get TMS done. I soon realized there were no TMS providers in Portland, at least none that my patients could access.

That’s how the idea for Active Recovery TMS was born.

If you’ve tried one antidepressant and it hasn’t worked for you, you’re a candidate for TMS treatment. Other good candidates for TMS include patients who’ve gotten good results from antidepressant medications but can’t tolerate the side effects that go along with them.

When a person takes an antidepressant medication, that medication affects the entire body, whereas with TMS, we’re just affecting specific neurons in the brain.

When these neurons are stimulated by TMS, they release neurotransmitters.

These neurotransmitters help decrease the symptoms of depression. Repeatedly stimulating these neurons wakes up the brain and allows these neurons to start functioning on their own.

At Active Recovery TMS, we use the latest research to guide our treatment protocols so patients have the best success of getting better. Often the improvements feel minor to start, but they  continue throughout the treatment, and by the end of treatment, most patients see a significant difference in their symptoms.

But many patients describe a feeling of hopefulness that they haven’t had in a long time.

I decided to look into TMS, and I found Active Recovery. It’s been five months now and I’ve only gotten better. I’m just really glad that I made that call to Dr. Horey. I really feel like I’m on a path to that happiness that I was looking for.

Some of our patients worry that TMS treatment is going to be painful. The truth is it’s tolerable

for almost all the patients. The treatment feels like someone is tapping you on the side of the head.

It’s an odd sensation, but it’s one that most people adjust to really quickly. We make sure patients know exactly what’s going on during the entire treatment, and we can stop a treatment at any time.

All of our employees have a lot of experience working in mental health here in Portland. We’ll do a thorough review of your medications, both with you and with your treatment providers, to make sure it’s safe for you to get TMS.

I’m excited to bring TMS to Portland because I think it’s an important treatment option for patients who haven’t gotten better with medications or therapy.

At Active Recovery TMS, we provide world-class patient-centered treatment. We’ve treated patients of all ages and from every walk of life, because everyone can get better using TMS.

At Active Recovery TMS, our goal is to provide a safe and effective alternative treatment for depression. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an especially important treatment option for those who have not had success with standard depression treatments like medication and/or therapy.

Our co-founder, Dr. Horey, became familiar with TMS while training and working at Columbia University in New York City where many of the early and important studies on TMS were conducted. Dr. Horey has since completed more extensive training in TMS and keeps himself up-to-date with the latest research on brain stimulation techniques, including TMS.
