DOES TMS WORK?

TMS was FDA approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder in 2008.

The early studies of TMS took those patients who had failed multiple medication trials, and what they found is that they had a success rate of about five times better than patients who have tried multiple medications.

This is part of the reason that TMS was approved for major depressive disorder because it was shown to be significantly more effective. Some patients experience minor side effects like headaches or scalp tenderness. What TMS patients don’t have to deal with are the side effects of anti-depressant medications.

These side effects can include things like weight gain, sexual side effects, or sedation.Things that most people don’t find tolerable if they have to take a medication long term.

There’s a lot of research going on with TMS for other medical conditions including anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, addictive disorders, tinnitus, migraine headaches and even chronic pain.

We are hopeful in the next few years we’ll see a lot more FDA approvals for other conditions.

At Active Recovery TMS, our goal is to provide a safe and effective alternative treatment for depression. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is an especially important treatment option for those who have not had success with standard depression treatments like medication and/or therapy.

Our co-founder, Dr. Horey, became familiar with TMS while training and working at Columbia University in New York City where many of the early and important studies on TMS were conducted. Dr. Horey has since completed more extensive training in TMS and keeps himself up-to-date with the latest research on brain stimulation techniques, including TMS.
