Our Program: Short-term Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

When it comes to talk therapy, finding the right fit can be difficult. Here at Active Recovery TMS, we offer a short-term cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) program for patients. CBT focuses on an individual’s thoughts and behaviors that contribute to their mental health condition, such as depression or anxiety. A therapist practicing CBT will work with an individual to analyze and break down thought and behavioral patterns that challenge preconceptions in the mind. CBT therapists emphasize what is going on in the person’s current life, rather than what has led up to their difficulties. A certain amount of information about one’s history is needed, but the focus is primarily on moving forward in time to develop more effective ways of coping with life.

Coping with the present, looking to the future

Through CBT, patients can gain a better understanding of the behavior and motivation of others as well as use problem-solving strategies to cope with difficult situations. The therapist may set goals, and assign “homework” such as keeping a thought journal, having patients practice mindfulness which involves learning to relax one’s mind and body, and using role-play to prepare for potentially stressful situations.

Not all CBT therapists will use these strategies, rather, a patient and psychologist will collaborate together to develop an understanding of what works best for the individual. CBT is known to be as effective as, or more effective than, other forms of psychological therapy or psychiatric medications.

If you believe CBT would be a good fit for you or someone you love, fill out the form below to schedule a free consultation. Therapy services are available at all six clinic locations.
